Built to Last
On March 17, 1903, Ventnor City was carved from Egg Harbor Township and incorporated as a city — named after the seaside resort of Ventnor on England's Isle of Wight, a suggestion made in January 1889 by the wife of S. Bartram Richards of the Camden and Atlantic Land Company.
Unlike neighboring resort towns that grew in fits and starts, Ventnor was purposely designed for permanent, year-round living. Its grid of tree-lined streets, consistent Victorian and Colonial Revival architecture, and measured lot sizes were laid out with intention — a quiet residential counterpart to Atlantic City's boardwalk spectacle.
Today the city occupies a narrow strip of Absecon Island between the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the bay to the north, its beaches wider and calmer than those to the northeast, its boardwalk a 1.7-mile stretch for walkers and cyclists rather than commercial tenants.

The Boardwalk
A 1.7-mile wood-plank promenade extending southwest from the Atlantic City Boardwalk along the Ventnor coast. Residential by design — walkers, joggers, and cyclists rather than arcade lights. Newport Avenue Beach hosts summer concerts and outdoor movies on the sand.
Ventnor Pier
A 1,000-foot timber pier reaching into the Atlantic — one of New Jersey's most atmospheric spots for fishing and shoreline photography. The pier separates the general beach from a dedicated surfing area to the north, where consistent Atlantic swells draw wave riders from Memorial Day onward.
Absecon Island
Ventnor sits at the centre of Absecon Island, flanked by Atlantic City to the northeast and Margate to the southwest. The back-bay wetlands — Beach Thoroughfare and the tidal marshes — provide ecological contrast to the ocean-facing beach: kayaking, birding, and a quietude the ocean side rarely offers.
Community Life
The Saturday Farmers Market runs every summer weekend — local produce, artisanal bakers, Jersey shore honey, and handmade goods. The Ventnor City Cultural Arts Center hosts exhibitions year-round. With a homeownership rate of 62%, this is a community of people who chose to stay.
